August bargaining update!
Hello BBIU Baristas!
Members of the Bargaining Committee met with Blue Bottle on Monday August 11 and Tuesday, August 12 and made real progress— reaching Tentative Agreements on:
Anti-Discrimination & Workplace Harassment
Bulletin Boards
Defining Café Leadership
Playlists
Creation of an Unpaid Time Off feature
As always, copies of what was passed back and forth at the table are linked below.
We also reached agreement on language for:
Tip Sheet
Protections from Drugs and Alcohol testing
Health and Safety
New Classifications
Protections from Layoffs
But here’s the catch: the Company wants us to withdraw our proposal on Promotions in exchange for these agreements.
Promotions have been a long-standing point of frustration for baristas. Many of us rarely see opportunities for advancement, and for those with seniority, “mission creep”—being given more responsibilities without the title, pay, or recognition—has become all too familiar.
When we pressed the Company on this, they claimed they were unaware of baristas being made false promises, strung along, or overlooked for advancement. With management this out of touch, it’s clearer than ever why we need strong contractual obligations defining how promotions work. Without enforceable language, the Company can keep operating however it wants—and we know what that looks like.
